Academic advising is an effective practice involving communication between the student and the advisor. It is a collaborative relationship respecting the expressed academic goals of the student. The clarification of student goals is an essential component of the advising process with an emphasis on student learning outcomes. The path to success begins with the advising connection.

Carolyn Mays is an Academic Advisor at Lone Star College-North Harris campus in Houston, Texas. She received a B.A. in Sociology from Prairie View A&M University. She obtained her M.Ed. in Guidance and Counseling from Texas Southern University. Carolyn has certifications in Secondary Social Studies (Composite), Guidance and Counseling and the Principal- Mid-Management from the Texas State Board of Education. She served 38 years in public education as a teacher, counselor, assistant principal and principal, retiring from Reynolds Elementary in Spring ISD in 2013. Carolyn and her daughter, Alexandria, a student at Texas A&M University, reside in Spring, Texas. Carolyn proudly serves on the Board of Directors of the Northwest Harris County Aggie Mom's Club and the Humble/Houston Northeast Chapter of the National Women Of Achievement. She enjoys reading, traveling and most of all being a servant leader by assisting students in achieving their goals.
